Introduction to management

Background

Siemens Energy Services needed to compliment existing training by providing a programme for new managers and team leaders in their business. There was also a need to retrospectively train their existing population of team leaders and managers.

The approach

People and Organisation Development scoped out a number of potential approaches to satisfy the requirements. The client chose a blended approach with elements of classroom training and some outdoor work. The programme was based in a city centre location over a two day period. This enabled the group to move outside of the classroom to investigate customer service in different organisations in a structured exercise. Direct input was complemented by live skills practice using people brought in from other parts of the business as observers. The nature of the programme was fast-moving, interactive and responsive to the specific needs of the group.

Knowledge elements were via a series of self study modules issued before the programme. Knowledge was tested at the end of the two days and a comprehensive feedback report delivered to candidate and their line manager incorporating skills feedback from live practice sessions and knowledge test results. Recommendations for future development were contained in this report.

The results

The programme has been running continuously for five years now and has recently been updated. Feedback has always been excellent and Siemens Energy Services are now looking at more advanced programme for more senior managers.
